Description
Point Loma Moonset
Coronado, California
Sunset and moonrise seem to get all the attention. More difficult to capture but equally beautiful is the moonset. Usually after the night of a full moon, the opportunity to do so occurs. Conditions must be perfect though and unfortunately they rarely are. For the first full moon of 2012 I waited three hours on a cold deserted beach several miles south of Coronado, only to have the moon disappear behind a bank of thick fog. The next morning however, the conditions were perfect and as dawn approached a gentle pallet of soft pastel colors were created in the cloudless sky. The descending moon became more vibrant and turned orange as it approached the horizon. Soothing waves tumbled onto the beach, their white foam lightly wisped into the cool morning air by a gentle offshore breeze. -Dan McGeorge
